When i was in Mysore during the vacation last week had to accompany my aunt, mom and my little buddy adi to a ancient cinema house in mysore called 'New Opera' to watch a meaningless movie called Jogi. Didnt see the phantoms in the Opera though. My aunt wanted to go to it as she had heard many people talking good things about the movie. I also was aware of the film's success, so thought lets see hows it, it'll be timepass too. This was my first Kannada movie in theatre in as many as 'dont know how many years' years. Kannada movie as i know now is mainly dominated by non-sense and crap. My initial feeling was like 'Oh this could a single good movie in the tons of bad movies, thats why all people are telling good things about it'.

What i saw was 'tricking ordinary folks into beleiving that its a very very good movie thanks to all gimminks, stunts and more of them plus some emotion of tears plus good music but in truth its yet another bad film cunningly disguised as a very good movie.

Now the film. The main motto of the film is money driven commercial sensentionalization most common in all current Kannada films which i feel is a disgrace to the art of filmmaking. It doesnt promote art or even entertainment for all genre. Its selfish money making buissness. That sensationalization comes in the form of 2/3 of the movie is all filled with extreme violence and bloodshed  with actors  fighting and killing each other with axes and sickles or the famous 'Machhu Longu'! And some long hair gimmik too.

After all the blood and more blood, now the director Prem thinks "Machhu longu...hmm.... is a usual afair as i saw in 'mental manja' and 'deadly soma', if thats all, my movie wont go beyond 'manja' and 'soma's success. It will only bring Kalasipalya's Machhu Manja, Langu Lokesha, Bomb Basava and Rod Rama and all thier friends to the theatres. If i can put something into it that will bring Pakkadmane 'Kamalamma','Seethamma', 'Subbanna' and 'Gauramma' into the theatres then it will be a double hit"
To do that, rest 1/3 of the film he adds the mother-son eternal relationship part as a secondary, makes it more emotional and heartbreaking bringing the  'CRUEL FATE' aspect into it.

The director then links the two main aspects of the film
1.) Bloodshed life of a rowdy
2.) Strong eternal bonding between mother and son.
He hopelessly draws a conclusion at the end that 'Jogi took to Violence only for his beloved mother!!!!!'. 'Jogi Thayigagi Machhu Hididanante !!!!! That link is very very weak. He justifies this statement by a rubbish, meaningless explanation. Its never justified strongly and can never be in real life !!! If Jogi wanted to be violence free he could have surrendered to police on a reformed note and being under thier protection he could have searched for his mother. But director wanted more machhu, longu for sensation and thats why brings him back to violenceAlso incident that triggers Jogi into a Rowdy where a innocent peaceful village boy has so much anger that he kills a rowdy for a silly reason because of his affection to his mother, makes it a weak story. At max he could given the culprit a good thrash. He should be a psycho to kill him! '

Hence results in a very very weak story, a major blow to the film. All the director does it, have sensational violence so that its a hit amongst all rowdies, robbers, dacoits and rouges and also have emotions so that its a hit amongst women and children. One stone, two birds. Hopelessly trying to make sense and to promote a good image to Hero he tries linking both the issues which itself doesnt make full sense.

Now the big qsn. Why the film became so popular amongst all genre if it was bad. Its answered above. The sad thing was audiance being im-mature was tricked into believing its a great movie depecting mother-son relationship.

Plus points of the movie Very good music, good touching performances by Shivraj Kumar, Arundhati Nag. The mother-son thing if looked independent of rest of the story its well depected but is short and only at the end of the movie. But sadly a poor storyline of linking the good thing with the sensation bloodshed overshadows all the good things.  Many say film was a hit solely because of it's music since songs were chartbusters even before the release.

All in all a average movie with bloodshed and violence but with good attracting music, emotional mother-son thing and hopelessly concluding and convincing audiance that "Hero took to Violence all for his mother (which is never justified), and thats why its a great sacrifice for his mother" and trying to link the two was the im-moral success formula for this movie. Thats what makes it bad.  Needless to say both my aunt and mom felt bad and disgusted after watching the movie. A sigh of relief for me atleast they are not im-mature as most audiance was. Yuck!! I also saw 2-3 grand old grandmas also in the theatre, i simply dont how thier lighter hearts would have tolerated all the gory scenes of the movie!

The last film I watched:
Black (Hindi) good not great movie..

On TV:
Last Hindi film.. A.Devagan's Bhagath Singh.. English Forrest Gump n Bean whenever they come.. I've watched those many times.. They'r the best..

Foreign: Watched Shreik 2 and Incredibles

Five films that I watch a lot or that mean a lot to me: (random order)

1) "Forrest Gump" :
The best movie ever for me.. Amazing depection of a simpleton's life, love and his adventures in a emotional and hilarious way. No seriousness.. funny n emotional mix.. Not for general indian mindset..
Tom Hanks looks like God to me after that movie. Hes awesome.. mainly cause he won Oscar for it playin the most difficult roles( a funny simpleton) to play n win Oscars (Most oscar winners play serious roles and win).
I watch it every time it comes on TV, Laugh when he says after readin a letter from Apple comps That "I got a letter from some kinda fruit company" and when he runs for no apparent reason n becomes famous.. n when sittin in the bus stand sayin "My Mamma told..".. n become emotional when his beloved genni dies n Forrest utters a emotional personal funeral speech..

2) Bean the Ultimate Disaster Movie
The funniest movie i've ever watched.. Mr.Bean great hes god.. his facial movements superb.. Movie filled with amazing innovative comedies.. jokes all round.. i laufh until i cry..

3) Shreik 1,2 :
Its no ordinary guy's movie.. Its a adult comedy comedy for grown ups.. High quality next generation jokes..

4) The legend of Bhagath singh :
Since iam more emotional and patriotic this is my best Hindi movie.. Superb performance by Devagan.. controlled depection by R.Santoshi.. songs are truely emotional by The God of music Rahman.. Not a masterpiece but truely a great work.. I've watched it many times..
I've cried at the last moment when the martyrs walk to "Phaci"(death chamber(may not be the right word)) smiling (Hus Hus the) and they hug each other with intense passion for one last time.. Those were martyrs.. at such young age.. Solute to their risky pledge..

5) Chachi 420 :
One of the most funniest Hindi movies i've evr watched.. great hilarious story.. ofcourse based on R.Williums's Mr.Doubtfire.. but its special to watch the Indian vesion of it.. its not a complete copy of Doubtfire just idea coipied.. jokes r awesome.. Last weak me Anoop n our freind Krishna had gone to watch Black.Krishna for the second time, hes a big fan of Rani. At the end of the movie there were tears in my eyes. Because there was full swinging fan right above my head itching my eyes all the time.

Overall movie was very good. Professional direction, acting, grand photography, costumes. Everything was fine. Nice touching story well presented spreading awareness among the public about the lives n issues of people with adverse disabilities. It gave clear message to the public to look at such persons with a special eye. No songs.. shows professiional film making approach that rates practicality above traditional means.

But 'Black' does have some drawbacks that are secondary in nature. Firstly director has needlessly sensationalized things by depecting the young girl as mentally retarded. he seems to have little control over her mind and acts very much like a ferocious beasts at times. Now why you need these things in a disabled persons. It wud have been better if the girl was depicted as a inactive girl totally neglected by her own parents n one who seemed to have no future. Amitabh does say shes not mentally retarded but her actions contradict this very much.

Secondly i was totally confused which location SLB actually meant in the film. It was supposed to be Shimla, HP, India. But the settings looked very much like American and that too not a 2005 setting.. very much a 1950s American setting !. All the dresses , roads , shops etc all echoed this. Didnt see any India in the Poeple or the places. So totally a weird n confusing place to mean it as Shimala. Totally out of sorts. This probably shows the western mind set of SLB. Hes more a fancy suit-boot western guy.

I think this is what actauly happened, SLB wanted to bring some glamour to the film by depicting a Christian family. Initially it might have been just that. Then he created a christian community. Added some westernization, addded some more , added some more and again added some more. He added so much lost in westrnization that he totally forgot that the settings were supposed to be in Shimla, India and finally he went to a 1950 American setting from what was supposed to be India. Very strange. The fact that more than half the dialogue is in English points towards needless fancy n sensetionalization.

This sensetionalization very much masks against the exellence thats been put into making the film. The exllence is there but invisible since its under the shadow of sensetionalization. Anyway as i said these are secondary issues n much more important things stand out against it. Take these drawbacks out its a wonderful film that holds u stiff n never takes your mind away. But one expects perfection from such a qualified , critically acclaimed film maker like SLB, not impracticle things.

Overall i wont call it it a masterpiece or a milestone, anyway worth watching good movie. I wudnt call it as the best movie i've seen. I'l give a 3 n a half. Oscars... iam a bit sceptical abt it. May be it will be Indian entry to Oscars but will loose to a better movieat the nomination stage itself.
