Last weak me Anoop n our freind Krishna had gone to watch Black.Krishna for the second time, hes a big fan of Rani. At the end of the movie there were tears in my eyes. Because there was full swinging fan right above my head itching my eyes all the time.
Overall movie was very good. Professional direction, acting, grand photography, costumes. Everything was fine. Nice touching story well presented spreading awareness among the public about the lives n issues of people with adverse disabilities. It gave clear message to the public to look at such persons with a special eye. No songs.. shows professiional film making approach that rates practicality above traditional means.
But 'Black' does have some drawbacks that are secondary in nature. Firstly director has needlessly sensationalized things by depecting the young girl as mentally retarded. he seems to have little control over her mind and acts very much like a ferocious beasts at times. Now why you need these things in a disabled persons. It wud have been better if the girl was depicted as a inactive girl totally neglected by her own parents n one who seemed to have no future. Amitabh does say shes not mentally retarded but her actions contradict this very much.
Secondly i was totally confused which location SLB actually meant in the film. It was supposed to be Shimla, HP, India. But the settings looked very much like American and that too not a 2005 setting.. very much a 1950s American setting !. All the dresses , roads , shops etc all echoed this. Didnt see any India in the Poeple or the places. So totally a weird n confusing place to mean it as Shimala. Totally out of sorts. This probably shows the western mind set of SLB. Hes more a fancy suit-boot western guy.

I think this is what actauly happened, SLB wanted to bring some glamour to the film by depicting a Christian family. Initially it might have been just that. Then he created a christian community. Added some westernization, addded some more , added some more and again added some more. He added so much lost in westrnization that he totally forgot that the settings were supposed to be in Shimla, India and finally he went to a 1950 American setting from what was supposed to be India. Very strange. The fact that more than half the dialogue is in English points towards needless fancy n sensetionalization.
This sensetionalization very much masks against the exellence thats been put into making the film. The exllence is there but invisible since its under the shadow of sensetionalization. Anyway as i said these are secondary issues n much more important things stand out against it. Take these drawbacks out its a wonderful film that holds u stiff n never takes your mind away. But one expects perfection from such a qualified , critically acclaimed film maker like SLB, not impracticle things.
Overall i wont call it it a masterpiece or a milestone, anyway worth watching good movie. I wudnt call it as the best movie i've seen. I'l give a 3 n a half. Oscars... iam a bit sceptical abt it. May be it will be Indian entry to Oscars but will loose to a better movieat the nomination stage itself.
